UD polyethylene laminate for vehicle armour panels

ULTAR™ HQ UD polyethylene laminates — pressed into panels in larger formats for vehicle protection. Weight saving against steel and aluminium.

The constraint

Every kilogram of armour costs you somewhere else

Vehicle protection is a mass budget problem before it is a ballistics problem. Armour weight comes out of payload, range, mobility and suspension life, and on a retrofit programme it is often the constraint that decides whether the design is viable at all.

Pressed UHMWPE panels deliver ballistic protection at a fraction of the mass of equivalent steel, which is why they appear across appliqué armour, spall liners and composite protection packages.

Role

Where HQ laminates sit in a vehicle protection package

ULTAR™ HQ laminates serve vehicle armour panels as they serve rigid personal protection inserts: as roll material pressed into a monolithic panel, either standalone where the threat permits a polyethylene-only design, or as backing behind a metallic or ceramic front.

How the panel is integrated into your protection package — appliqué, spall liner, structural or hybrid — is a platform engineering decision and yours to make. We supply the material and can indicate a starting point from the data we hold.

Build

How an HQ vehicle panel is built

HQ laminates are supplied as roll material at 1.60 m minimum width and consolidated by you. Layers are stacked to a target areal density and hot-pressed into a rigid panel.

Areal density is per layer. Total panel areal density is layer count × the per-layer value of the grade, plus facing, strike face or mounting hardware in your construction.

Panel size

HQ laminates are supplied at 1.60 m minimum roll width. Panel width is therefore bounded by the roll width unless you splice, and panel size beyond that is a function of your press bed.

Larger panels mean fewer joints, and joints are where a protection package is weakest — so roll width is worth designing around early. Where your target panel exceeds 1.60 m in one axis, tell us and we will confirm what is available.

Consolidation

Consolidation

Pressing parameters determine consolidation quality, and larger vehicle-panel formats make uniformity harder to achieve than on a personal-protection plate. Consolidation quality determines ballistic performance and delamination resistance in service, including under the vibration and thermal cycling a vehicle panel sees and a body armour plate does not.

Parameters and process are yours. We can indicate a starting point from the data available to us.

Material

The material

The ULTAR™ HQ line is the hard ballistic family — roll material for pressed panels. The current grade is HQ710, at 235 g/m² per layer; further HQ grades are in development. Ballistic performance data and layer counts by threat level are available under NDA.
